There are many ways to save money on solar power grids.  There are many DIY kits available on the market, complete with plans, diagrams for creating your own solar panels with voltaic cells, and even converting you shingles and roof tiles over to solar tiles.  With so many choices, this is where you should start.

With so much interest in going solar, the prices of panels have started to come down.  Still,  buying them as a unit can still be expensive, considering how easy it is to make your own.  There are many do it yourself kits, complete with lists of materials needed, and simple step by step instructions.  Many of these kits will also give you a list of suppliers, where you can get the components needed to build your own panels, or even complete power grids.

The real question is how much time and effort do you want to spend putting together panels?  If you have the time, then it is not a big issue.  You may find it a bigger savings in time just to go out and buy your solar panels, there are many used ones that are much less expensive than buying new, and in most cases last just as long.

If you decide to go with one of those do it yourself kits, look around first.  While these will probably save you the most money, not all kits are the same.  When looking for the right DIY kit, choose one that has the most benefits.  Pick one that not only supplies lists of what you need, and instructions on making them, but also one that explains installing, and transferring power off of the grid.  It should also give you information on inverters, and any other components you need.

There are many different kits to choose from, even some costing hundreds of dollars.  You may find that you don’t need to spend that kind of money on a kit, there are many that cost  well under $100.  Take your time, look around and compare prices, and features of each kit.  Now matter what system you go with, you can cut you ties with the electric company, and save hundreds, even thousands a year.
